loving our neighbors

one meal at a time

We all can imagine a perfect society with food for all

but is it possible? In Texas:

people struggle with hunger

are children

%

Changing lives, every cupboard

Although our government helps those in need and there are many wonderful charities that do the same, it is not enough. We don’t have to accept this reality. We can directly help those around us that are hurting. With the Little Free Pantry in Arkansas serving as our inspiration, its time that we brought this movement to Texas, with Austin leading the way. Petite Pantry provides small cupboards to put outside your church, business, or home free of charge.

Fighting hunger, directly

You can gather together a group of humanitarians, friends, church members, neighbors, coworkers, or service organization members and keep it filled with food. This is such a beautiful act because those in need can quietly and quickly take food, while those that are more fortunate and have a surplus of food can donate. There is no judgement as to why the person has the need, how much food they take, or who they are. It is a simple and pure act of unconditional love. It helps the stomach of the hungry recipient, as well as the heart of the giver. Please join our grassroots efforts as we use this concept to fight hunger in a new and direct way.

“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as yourself” Mark 12:31.

How you can help

Be a Pantry Sponsor:

As a pantry sponsor, you will put up one of our pantries in front of your house, business, or church. We can install it for you. You will organize your friends, coworkers, church members etc to help keep it filled with food! The location will be listed on our site, along with your logo if desired.

Host a Food Drive:

We will assist and make sure that food is distributed to our pantries.

FAQ

What do I put in my pantry?
Recommended filler are canned vegetables, fruit, and meat, and other non perishable goods that are NOT expired. We also recommend personal care items, such as tampons, pads, and toilet paper.

Since canned food can spoil past 85 degrees, we recommend saving the canned food for the cooler months. Here are some recommendations of safe food for our hot Austin summers!

  • packaged rice
  • packaged beans
  • freeze dried fruit or other freeze dried items
  • powdered potatoes
  • dry milk
  • nuts
  • flour
  • bread mix and other powdered mixes
  • ultra high temp pasteurized milk
  • HEB gift cards
  • powdered drink mixes
  • feminine products
  • toilet paper
  • other packaged snacks that won’t spoil in the heat

You can also keep a little thermometer in the pantry if you want to keep an eye on the temp.

Can I put up my own pantry that isn't a Petite Pantry?
Of course! Although we provide the pantry and list it on our website for you, anyone can do this! Just make sure that you have permission from the land owner and/or Homeowner’s Association and acquire any necessary permits. Please see our legal section for more details.
How do I determine the location of my Petite Pantry?
Your location should be in an area where people can easily and safely grab the food. We can help you determine if your location is legally acceptable and safe. Also, make sure that your neighbors support your project!
How often do I fill the pantry with food?
As much as you desire. This is your project.
Are there any rules?
Please see legal section. Also, do not put anything sharp or dangerous inside. Do not put in chemicals, clothing, or anything illegal. If your food pantry doesn’t empty quickly, monitor cans for bulging or leaking, especially in the summertime. Visit your pantry daily to make sure everything is in good shape.
